Tamara Karsavina became an outstanding ballerina in her lifetime. Her technical perfection, intelligence, and deep feeling made her a prima ballerina. George Balanchine was captivated by her when he was a student at the Imperial Ballet School in 1913. She later danced with Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe and created many of her most famous roles sometimes opposite her partner Vaslav Nijinsky. George Barbier recreated her artistic style in twelve pochoir illustrations of which only 512 prints of each illustration were produced.
